Visiting Purdue University Adjunct Professor and Imec Fellow Professor Francesca Iacopi will visit UW-Madison this week to present on the capabilities of Imec’s Indiana Semiconductor R&D Center. Q&A and round table discussion will follow the presentation and focus on collaboration opportunities and shared research interests.
Cookies and coffee (regular and decaf) will be provided. Attendees are welcome to stay for the full session or drop in as their schedules allow.

From materials to systems in nanoelectronics: an R&D perspective
Francesca Iacopi, Imec Fellow, FIEEE
Director, Indiana Semiconductor R&D Center, Imec USA
Adjunct Prof., Elmore Family School of Computer and Electrical Engineering, Purdue University
Abstract
The continuous miniaturization of electronic devices has fueled demand for improved performance and multifunctionality. As semiconductor R&D grows increasingly complex, bridging the gap between fundamental ideas and implementable technologies is critical. Professor Iacopi will discuss the role of 2D materials in extending scaling trajectories, the challenges of integrating them into advanced FETs, and the need for holistic, co-designed computing architectures to overcome limitations of traditional Von Neumann systems.
About the speaker
Francesca Iacopi is an IEEE Fellow with over 20 years of industrial and academic experience in semiconductor technologies, spanning interconnects, devices, and packaging. She is recognized for her pioneering work on porous dielectrics in on-chip interconnects and the alloy-mediated epitaxial graphene platform on SiC wafers.
Career highlights include:
- Recipient of the MRS Gold Graduate Student Award (2003)
- Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (2012)
- Global Innovation Award in Washington, DC (2014)
- Named among Engineers Australia’s most innovative engineers (2018)
Professor Iacopi serves on multiple IEEE and Materials Research Society committees, is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Materials for Electron Devices, and sits on editorial boards for leading journals. In 2024, she joined Imec USA as Director of the Indiana R&D Center, based at Purdue University.
